Year of the Dog

The loss of a pet can leave an owner utterly depressed and even on the verge of insanity, as is the case in writer/director Mike White’s latest dark comedy. The always quirky Molly Shannon stars as Peggy, the organized office worker, supportive aunt and friend everyone can rely on. However, when her beloved pooch, Pencil, dies from toxin consumption, Peggy falls apart. She forges checks, takes her niece to a slaughterhouse and schmoozes with a dog-shooting neighbor (John C. Reilly). But when an asexual vegan animal lover (Peter Sarsgaard) suggests an adopt-a-pet plan, crazy Peggy finally finds some worthy companionship. With surprising subtlety and compassion, this film will entertain the animal lover in all of us.
