When Comedy Went to School

Robert Klein sort of hosts this documentary about standup comedy in the former vacation mecca that was the Catskills in New York. Featuring interviews with the likes of Sid Caesar, Jerry Lewis, Jackie Mason and Jerry Stiller and archive footage of Woody Allen, Rodney Dangerfield and Jerry Seinfeld, the film feels more like a TV special than an actual movie. Those truly interested in the significance of the Catskills and its impact on modern standup might find something essential in the film. Others will be bored. The film just brushes over the fact that the Catskills, after Woodstock, began a long and steady drop as far as business goes. I would’ve liked to see more about why that happened.

When Comedy Went to School is not showing in any theaters in the area.
