Wendy and Lucy

Rated R 80 minutes 2008

I hate movie soundtracks. So I love Wendy and Lucy, because the film’s only music is Michelle Williams humming a Will Oldham composition as she wanders around a small town looking for her lost dog. For 80 minutes, people act like people; the camera carefully frames each shot; the dialogue is simultaneously poetic and natural; and then everything ends in a satisfyingly unsatisfying manner. It’s definitely one of the best films of 2008 (which is not saying much). Wendy and Lucy is a good example of how a tightly restricted budget can enhance creativity.
