The Tongues of Truth "Let's Talk About Girls" / "You Can't Come Back" 13 Records M-101, 1977 (200 copies pressed, included pic sleeve)
Dave Gibson was a large, friendly, good-natured fellow who was obsessed with records and comics. He rabidly collected '60s garage and psych 45s, while his brother obsessively collected singles from the '50s. During a "brotherly" fight over a record, one brother trashed the other's car with a hammer at their Los Angeles area multi-level house on Carondelet Street, inspiring the neighborhood children to refer to the residence as the "Danger House". Shortly after, the legendary Los Angeles punk label Dangerhouse was started there by David Brown, Black Randy, and some of Dave Gibson's other upstairs tenants. Dave's very own label, Moxie, mostly "reissued" (ok, bootlegged) numerous rare records from his collection, and included the spotty and low-fi—though charming!—Boulders '60s garage LP series. Moxie records were released under different label names such as Mutt, 13 Records, and others. He pressed a large number of 45s, including many of the '60s "revival" bands from the early '80s such as The Unclaimed, The Pandoras, The Miracle Workers, and The Surf Trio. His 45 reissues included rarities by a pre-Mothers Zappa, Johnny Farfisa, Moving Sidewalks, Eddie & The Showmen, and Tucson's own Tongues of Truth on this one-sided 7" single. Only 200 were pressed making this one harder to find than the originals. Dave, unfortunately, passed away a number of years ago at the age of 45. An ironic number considering his obsession.
Lee Joseph grew up in Tucson. He's a DJ (Luxuriamusic.com), marketer of cool shit (Reverberations Media) and founder/CEO of internationally respected Dionysus Records, an indie that has long specialized in releasing super-rare music, and more. He came of age in the first wave of Tucson punk rock and is an expert on Tucson music. He now lives in California. Vintage Vinyl is a recurring addition to the Tucson Weekly.
