Re: “Mailbag

I conclude it requires no common sense to get an Emmy in sound design. There are two major sources of aircraft noise: 1) Air flow over the surfaces and 2) Engine noise. Four aircraft flying in formation are MUCH more efficient than they are flying solo. It's common sense that the 1st aircraft makes most all of the noise, again for two reasons. 1)The three tailing planes follow in the wake of the first plane, greatly reducing the noise made by the aircraft surfaces. 2)Since it takes energy to make noise and the three tailing planes are making less noise, they are using less energy. Thus, the 3 tailing aircraft engines need to produce less thrust and the engine noise is also greatly reduced. Common sense, just like you back of on your gas pettal on the highway when you get in the draft of a big truck. Same physics - acoustics - arodynamics - pressure differences. However, if the four planes went into afterburner you would have four times the sound. WHATEVER - IT'S COMMON SENSE - ONE PLANE IS WAY TOO LOUD FOR ME
