Two Weeks Notice

Rated NR

It’s a textbook romantic comedy with formulaic sequencing, inadequate character development and abruptly cut scenes, but it works. The innate charm and the talented comedic delivery of Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock turn this would-be sleeper into an entertaining fun-filled night at the movies. Grant stars as a shallow chauvinist with deep pockets who hires a new chief counsel, a determined political flower child of the new millennium, played by Bullock, who could guarantee that no animals were harmed in the making of her clothes, make-up and food. Caring more about his outward appearance than the bureaucracy involved in his billion-dollar company, the Don Juan Rockefeller makes his legal eagle choose the proper envelope for his personalized stationary and the perfect belt to match his flashy ego. Caring more about the longevity of property threatened by greedy developers than her boss’ pricey accessories, Bullock gives her two weeks notice. Soon the two learn they care more for each other than for belts and buildings. Writer/Director Marc Lawrence re-teams with Bullock, which was a surefire way of preventing his having to give Hollywood his own two weeks notice for this potential professional pitfall.
