Tuck Everlasting

Heck, we’d watch just about anything that cute-as-a-hummingbird Alexis Bledel (from TV’s Gilmore Girls) appeared in, even this Hallmark card of a movie based on the popular children’s novel by Natalie Babbitt. Bledel plays Winnie Foster, a Victorian-era teen-ager who falls in love with a young man from a family of immortals. Their endless lives have something to do with a spring of eternal life, which naturally is destined to be threatened with exploitation. Hokey homilies and thick treacle make this a film that is likely to move the younger set but leave their parents feeling disappointed. Jay Russell (My Dog Skip does a decent job as director, but the misty filters through which we see Winnie’s adventure are more than a little silly. Nevertheless, noted actors William Hurt, Sissy Spacek, Amy Irving, Ben Kingsley and Victor Garber signed on for the ride.
