Young Scout Finch (Mary Badham) and her older brother, Jem (Phillip Alford), grow up in sleepy Maycomb, Alabama, spending much of their time with their friend Dill (John Megna) spying on their reclusive neighbor, Boo Radley (Robert Duvall). When their idealistic lawyer father Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) defends a young black man named Tom Robinson (Brock Peters) on rape charges, the trial and subsequent events open the children's eyes about the evils of racism and stereotyping.
