There are two things many book clubs are synonymous with: literature and wine.

The Pima Library Foundation's Circle of Book Clubs group fits these requirements, but then ramps up the involvement a few levels by turning an ordinary gathering to discuss a book into an interactive event.

Many of these events are in private homes, but the latest theme required a bigger venue: the universe.

The University of Arizona's Flandrau Science Center will be the site of the next Circle of Book Clubs meeting. "Starstruck!" will include a discussion led by UA astronomy professor Chris Impey, who will talk about the impact of the cosmos on fiction.

"We love having this theme of astronomy," said Rona Rosenberg, Circle of Book Clubs' chairwoman. "We'll have wine and food, and all of the food will be crescent- and star-shaped."

Rosenberg, a librarian at the Kirk-Bear Canyon library branch, said the Circle of Book Clubs was started by a fellow librarian who wanted to create affordable author events that went beyond the standard format of reading from a book. Past guests have included authors such as Diana Gabaldon.

"We like to have beautiful minds come in," Rosenberg said.

Impey, who is also an author, has written both fiction and nonfiction related to space. His first novel, Shadow World, came out in 2013.

"He's a funny, witty, down-to-earth person," Rosenberg said of Impey. "I think any layperson will enjoy this."

Sunday's gathering costs $35, of which $25 is tax-deductible because it benefits the Pima Library Foundation. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door, but Rosenberg said those wishing to pay at the door should call by Friday to ensure that seats are still available.
