I think I’ve got the basic plot of a Nicholas Sparks-penned movie down: Two young people from different social backgrounds fall in love; a secret, a family member or a combination of the two threatens the relationship; someone has to die from a body-ravaging disease to bring the two back together. You’ll get all of that, plus Miley Cyrus, in The Last Song, the first of Sparks’ books to be adapted by Sparks himself. Cyrus plays troubled-teen Ronnie, who, along with her younger brother, is forced to spend the summer with their father (Greg Kinnear). Ronnie immediately bails to go cause trouble at the beach; there, she meets Will (Liam Hemsworth), a strapping rich boy … and the rest is pretty much outlined above. While it’s no The Notebook, the movie is definitely better than Dear John; however, it’s getting awfully boring to repeatedly watch the same movie with different actors.
