The Last Sin Eater

Rated NR

The premise for The Last Sin Eater shows a lot of promise: A rural American community continues an ancient tradition of exiling one of their members so he can act as a “sin eater” who appears only at funerals to devour the misdeeds of the recently departed. But a young girl (Liana Liberato), troubled by her deadly sin, seeks out the sin eater and learns some dark secrets about her tiny village. Unfortunately, the film is glacially slow and overly in love with dull close-ups, and it unforgivably inserts some embarrassingly awful video compositing into otherwise gorgeous shots of the Appalachians. Louise Fletcher, who deserves better, has a decent role, but there’s no way she can save this film from its general incompetence.
