The Double

Rated PG-13

Hollywood misses the Red Menace. Sure, filmmakers have made reliable villains out of terrorists and drug kingpins, but when push comes to shove, nothing beats the old Soviet Union. And so the Cold War is back, lukewarm, in The Double. A film almost suspiciously dated, it’s a spy-vs.-spy story starring Richard Gere and Topher Grace … not exactly a can’t-miss combo. Although both work in U.S. intelligence, one is obviously a double agent. That’s not a big spoiler or anything—the movie is called The Double. Gere is OK, but Topher Grace seems either out of his comfort zone or in over his head; he’s tough to buy as a top-notch FBI agent. If nothing else, it whets our appetite for a more-legitimate Soviet spy caper: The adaptation of John le Carré’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy will be released in a few weeks. You’re probably better off waiting.
