Fox Searchlight is one of the best distributors of independent films. In the last 10 years, the studio has given world numerous under-the-radar hits, including Sideways and (500) Days of Summer. The Art of Getting By, the latest Searchlight release, tries to capture the spirit of both of those films, while also trying to be a sort of modern retelling of The Catcher in the Rye. However, the film, starring Freddie Highmore and Emma Roberts as potential high school lovers, is far too derivative and gets hampered by vain attempts at profundity. The situations and the dialogue are nearly always unbelievable; listening to what these kids have to say is like listening to a pretentious hipster-poet trying to express his misery and despair. The actors are stiff, and their characters are unlikable, whiny douchebags. It’s sad, really; one can only hope this is just a hiccup for Fox Searchlight.
