Rainn Wilson gets his first truly great film role as Frank, a diner cook on the verge of losing his hot wife (Liv Tyler) to the town drug-dealer (Kevin Bacon). When all seems lost, Frank invents a vigilante alter-ego, the Crimson Bolt, and starts caving heads in with a big monkey wrench. Libby (Ellen Page), a comic-store clerk, eventually becomes his sidekick, Boltie, and they wreak gleeful havoc on crime. Writer/director James Gunn has made a sick and fun movie; Page’s performance is the best thing about it. When Boltie bashes in a face with happy abandon, it is the stuff of great (and quite dark) comedy. Wilson is fun, even if he is quite dour. Bacon is hilarious, getting laughs nearly every second he is onscreen. Super has a shot at being the year’s best cult film.
