An interesting experiment in shifting perspectives. For about an hour, this film is a standard family drama: Mama has died, and the grown children must dispose of her estate. But then a strange turn occurs, and the objects of the estate attain an independent existence. The characters are put into the shadows cast by the things, and suddenly, their disagreements and desires seem smaller and sadder and, because of that, more precious. Finally, they leave the film entirely, and the next generation appears to take a final look around before running off and kicking dirt over the faint trail left by those who came before them.
