Rated R 118 minutes 2009

This is a standard little-guy-tries-to-make-it-big story, a standard sports story of the Rocky sort, and a standard fish-out-of-water story, all mixed together—and somehow, the result is something utterly fresh. Miguel “Sugar” Santos is a Dominican teenager who gets a chance to play baseball in America. Speaking little English, he moves in with an elderly Iowan couple and tries to adjust to life in the whitest part of the Midwest. As the story runs through the standard tropes, it develops not only a new perspective on the old narrative, but takes a fresh departure from it as well. Even if you have no love of sports movies, baseball or friendly Iowans, you’ll enjoy Sugar, as long as you like good storytelling and sensitive filmmaking.
