NON-ZERO POSSIBILITY

NO ONE ELSE BUT YOU

Honestly, I think the best thing you can do with your concert dollar this week is go see La Cerca at Congress for their free record release show on Friday, Aug. 15 and pick up a copy of their stellar new album Sunrise for Everyone. I know I mentioned how much I enjoy the album in the space a few weeks ago, but if you like The Church or Big Star or spent time making mixtapes in high school, this will be right up your alley. Of course, we also have a profile of the band in this week's issue, so let's move on to the rest of the (also excellent) concert choices this week.

RUNAROUND

Rock history is full of live albums, whether that's Dylan's "Royal Albert Hall" show, Cheap Trick's Live at the Budokan, or the Who's Live at Leeds, but how often do you have the opportunity to be on a live record? Well, if you've ever wanted to hear your cheering and ignored yelled requests captured for the ages, indie/doom rock act Horse Black are recording their Friday, Aug. 15 show at Flycatcher for a future release. Back to the Well opens the 9 p.m. show, with a $5 cover, but really what price can you put on immortality. More info at theflycatchertucson.com or at the show's event page on Facebook.

MY LIFE

Now that I think about it, La Cerca are pretty great and you should definitely go to their show, but geez, Randy Newman is playing the Fox on Tuesday, Aug. 19, and how often does one of America's great pop songwriters roll through town? Sure, in recent years, Newman has been associated with film composition, primarily for the folks at Disney and Pixar, but he's also a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, wrote Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me Not to Come," and probably should be forever famous for his satirical look at the Deep South and the culture of racism, 1974's Good Old Boys. If you haven't heard that album, go to Spotify now and take a listen. It's brilliant. No clue what Newman plays live, although I'm bet you'll hear "Short People" and "You've Got a Friend in Me," but he's got an incredible catalog of songs worth the ticket price. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show range from $49 to $83, with tickets $2 more day of show. More info at foxtucsontheatre.org.

SIREN CALL

Yes, there's the La Cerca show, but Club Congress has a bunch of other notable concerts this week as well as part of their ridiculous August lineup. Prominent among the national acts: remixers-turned-electro-poppers Little Daylight (RIYL: St. Lucia, La Roux) on Monday, Aug. 18 with Young Rising Sons ($10, $12 at the door, all ages, 7 p.m.); and Megafaun spinoff (although they sound nothing like Megafaun) Sylvan Esso (RIYL: Tuneyards, Grimes) on Tuesday, Aug. 19 with Dana Buoy ($12, $14 at the door, all ages, 7 p.m.).

On the local front, an interesting experiment on Wednesday, Aug. 20 as Haphazard takes the stage, billed as "a night of R&B, hip-hop and jazz," which isn't the sort of thing we get in this town all that often. Made up of a group of performers with connections to the UA's jazz program, they'll be playing original work and covers of songs by Frank Ocean, Radiohead, Robert Glasper and Radiohead, with special guest MC's also in the mix. I applaud the ambition of these guys; should be an interesting show. Tickets are $5 for the 18 and over show, with doors at 8:30. More info on all the Congress shows at hotelcongress.com.
