It is not just "some critics" of the program who say that, in order for the Mexican wolf to become self-sustaining, the entire recovery population should increase to a minimum of 750 wolves in at least three core zones (the current population in the Blue Mountains of AZ/NM, the Grand Canyon watershed of northern AZ/southern UT, and southern CO/northern NM) linked by travel corridors. It was the professional biologists of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service who came to that conclusion.
