To help his family earn a living, Siddharth (Irfan Khan) takes a job in a factory in Delhi. It violates child labor laws but because of the poverty in Delhi, Siddharth’s father, Mahendra (Rajesh Tailang), has no other alternative. When the boy doesn’t make it back home, it triggers a seemingly hopeless investigation into the missing child. India is plagued by runaways and abducted minors, and Siddharth introduces us to the layers of motionless bureaucracy that stands in his father’s way. In contrast to an American presentation of these events, Mahendra can’t simply put his life on hold to find his boy. There’s so little money available, and making it is so laborious, that he must balance the economics of his situation with the tragedy of losing his son. It’s a really gripping film, one that avoids sugarcoating its message to underscore a major humanitarian crises in developing nations.
