Rated PG-13 129 minutes 2013

It’s not asking too much for a documentary that purports to blow the lid off something to supply more than the same batch of photographs over and over, a limited number of first-person interviews, and no real ”Aha!” moment. Salinger takes us into the reclusive life of author J.D. Salinger and discovers that—wait for it—he wanted to be left alone. Supposing you’ve been waiting since the publication of Franny and Zooey in the 1960s to get your hands on some new fiction by the writer of The Catcher in the Rye, at least you’ll find out when some new stuff will be unveiled—but couldn’t a press release do that? Shane Salerno has directed a film (and written a companion book) that doesn’t rise to the level of investigative journalism. It’s all surface stuff when anything anybody wants to know is miles below the surface.
