Safety Not Guaranteed

Rated R 84 minutes 2012

One of the year's better movies, Safety Not Guaranteed has nevertheless struggled to keep box office momentum, which is critical for a small movie left to fend for itself against the blitzkrieg of summer spectacles. This quirky comedy about a man who wants to go back in time, the classified ad he places to find an assistant, and the journalists who pose as potential co-conspirators is very funny in a low-key way, and was smart enough to win this year's screenwriting award at Sundance. The film is based on an actual classified ad, by the way; it's a miracle that it took 15 years to be turned into a movie. The big takeaway from Safety Not Guaranteed is Aubrey Plaza from Parks and Recreation. This one could really springboard her career ... if people start showing up to see it, that is.
