Romeo & Juliet

Rated PG-13 118 minutes 2013

There are many wonderful reasons to remake a Shakespeare classic, and wonderful interpretations to be found. The Bard has been put on the screen by filmmakers as varied as Akira Kurosawa, Orson Welles, Joss Whedon, Baz Luhrmann and Jirí Trnka, whose A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a stop-motion puppet show narrated by Sir Richard Burton. However, this new Romeo and Juliet by Italian director Carlos Carlei is wildly uninteresting. But when Swarovski—yep, the jewelry people—is footing the bill for the production, maybe that’s to be expected. Fun fact: This movie has also inspired a new Swarovski line, so order yours today! Hailee Stanfield from True Grit and Douglas Booth are your tragic lovers, and they’re miscast badly. After that, does anything else matter in this story? Blessedly, it’s one of the shorter Romeo and Juliet productions, but short punishment is still punishment.
