It’s interesting to see some of the reaction to the remake of RoboCop, the 1987 film that diluted its impact with sequels and video games. It’s being decried in some circles because it lacks the serious tone of the original and—brace yourself—they also changed too many things. So which is it, complainers? These remakes are too similar or not similar enough? The new RoboCop has the same basic setup (crime-fighting cyborg takes on evil corporate titan) but, yes, much is new here. It’s the additions that actually help RoboCop: Gary Oldman as the scientist who makes it possible, an angle about the police officer’s wife and young son, and great new effects that make the idea of parts of man living on inside a protective exoskeleton kind of believable. Is it trying to make a statement? Nope. Is that OK? Yep.
