Rated R 103 minutes 2010

It is always nice to see a movie starring Catherine Deneuve, a woman who radiates strength, charm, intelligence and an ageless beauty and grace. Now if only Potiche gave her an opportunity to use all of those things. While she’s certainly good enough in this mid-’70s dramedy about a labor dispute, infidelity and the fate of the family umbrella company, Potiche runs out of ingenuity long before its story is told. Gérard Depardieu plays Deneuve’s former lover and the instigator of the labor unrest. The film should either be much funnier, or it shouldn’t play for comedy at all; given how straight-laced Fabrice Luchini is as her husband, as well as Deneuve’s track record of great performances, Potiche probably shouldn’t have gone for laughs. The ones it does get aren’t worth the sacrifice.
