Re: “Sanctuary Awaits

Closed for vacation until Sept. 6. Seems like a funny time to print an article about a restaurant. "It's great, but they're closed all month...."

Re: “Two Close Races Remain Undecided in Pima County

Excuse me, but how does voting in any form make me irresponsible? From the Arizona Daily Star, because I couldn't find the information on the Weekly site: "You can drop your ballot off at a polling place. If you were to request another ballot at a polling place, youd get a provisional ballot and it would slow down the process." Wouldn't you say the "irresponsible" voters are the roughly 45% who didn't bother to show up at all?

Re: “A Tale of Two Cities

Burkholder's point about the "new" McDonalds is nonsensical. First, it wasn't "new"... there is a McDonalds a half a mile away that would have been abandoned to move to the new location. Second, the developer wanted a 24-hour 2 lane drive through. If the developer had gone for a single lane drive through he wouldn't have even needed to change the land-use for the property, and third... it was the RESIDENTS of the two affected neighborhoods who protested that got the developer to withdraw his request... the city never even voted on it.

Re: “If a Botched Execution Isn't Enough to End the Death Penalty in Arizona, What Is?

So many things to say:

1. I am one of those victim's family members who is opposed to the death penalty. I take the Constitution at its word: no cruel and unusual punishment shall be inflicted. And I don't believe any government should be in the business of taking the lives of its citizens, but ESPECIALLY not in a system that is so heavily prejudiced toward people who are poor and people of color.

2. As a family member I believe it is easier to heal if a life without possibility of parole sentence is handed out immediately. I do not have to relive the event repeatedly for years and years and I do not have to feel guilt for taking the life of another human being.

3. I'm sure there are victims of other crimes who do not agree with the sentences handed down. That is not how the justice system works in this country. We do not let (biased) victims determine what an appropriate punishment is.

4. No matter what my beliefs are about the death penalty in general, the CURRENT SYSTEM ISN'T WORKING. At a minimum, executions should be suspended until they can figure out the drug issue. If the state cannot obtain the combination that was used "humanely" in the past, then the state is just going to have to wait.

Re: “Reefer Research Madness

Career Researcher... it was going to be a randomized, triple blind study. No matter what she or anyone else might WANT the results to be, they would simply be working with data. And although I am NOT a career researcher I believe in the world of science we would all agree that Tylenol is "safe," yet Tylenol poisoning has caused more than 1,500 accidental deaths. Can Career Researcher perhaps tell me how many people in history have died from cannabis poisoning? Since there is no FDA approval for cannabis yet I will defer to the doctors, who take the oath of "first do no harm," along with the historical data to agree with any person who deems cannabis safe.

Re: “Home Is Where the Hut Is

I have been wondering if the schools we are closing could somehow be used as homeless shelters, or at the very least, looking at this program, if their bathroom/shower facilities and grounds could be utilized. I also dream of community gardening on these properties as a way to feed people and possibly help people "pay" for their lodging by working in the garden.
