Smoke Signal

UA Area

March 5, 12:29 a.m.

A man who ransacked a car left no evidence of his entry, and no fingerprints ... but he did leave behind a much bigger clue: a still-lit cigarette he'd been casually smoking during his whole escapade, a University of Arizona Police Department report stated.

As it turns out, the man would've been caught anyway—a random witness saw him inside the vehicle, parked on the UA campus, before UA officers later apprehended him and jailed him for invading the vehicle as well as having two outstanding warrants for his arrest. The car's owner was very angry about the incident.

Perhaps this was because, although the subject had neither stolen anything from the owner nor technically damaged the car (it had actually been left unlocked, saving him the effort of breaking in), anyone will admit that the smell of cigarette smoke in a vehicle can be harder to eradicate than any paint scratch or spill.
