A burly 33-year-old man insisted it was "mutual combat" between him and an elderly male motorist that resulted in a split lip for the latter, a Pima County Sheriff's Department report said.
The 65-year-old motorist said the approximately 6-foot-tall, 200-pound man cut him off in a parking lot. The pair exchanged words, he said, and then the man allegedly punched him in the mouth.
A deputy took a picture of a large cut to the motorist's lip, which was still bleeding three hours after the incident.
The 33-year-old denied punching the elderly man, saying instead that the pair had only shoved each other after the motorist flipped him off.
The man admitted it was possible he might have done damage to the motorist's face, as the 65-year-old was getting out of his car when he pushed him back inside.
Deputies decided there was probable cause to charge the 33-year-old with misdemeanor assault.

A man admitted to ramming his head into a windshield so he could get his girlfriend in trouble for assault, a University of Arizona Police Department report stated.
An officer investigating an unrelated traffic accident was flagged down by a woman who had passed by in her car. She said that her boyfriend was crazy and wanted him out of the vehicle.
The boyfriend insisted that his girlfriend had "hit him in the head with a brick or something." He demanded that she be arrested, adding that the officer was a "fuckin' pig."
Upon further questioning, the boyfriend admitted to hitting his own head to get his girlfriend in trouble. He then called the officer "a pig devil," the report alleged.
Police arrested the man on a charge of false reporting to an officer.
