Phat Girlz

Hail to all full-figured females! Big-bottomed beauties of the world, unite! Thin is no longer in, and women with bulging waistlines are the new fad. At least that’s the case according to rookie writer/director Nnegest Likké’s power-to-the-plus-size film starring ample-bodied actress Mo’Nique. Typically known for her boisterous cameos and comic relief, Mo’Nique now takes center stage as a soft-spoken aspiring fashion designer who constantly is chastised for her weight and who works in a dead-end job at a generic department store. However, in the blink of an eye, the stymied stylist takes a whirlwind ride to fame and fortune, reminiscent of Mariah Carey’s idealized Glitter. Even though simplistic filming and editing techniques were used to capture amateurish acting, it’s refreshing to see a cinematic slap in the face to every airbrushed and anorexic-looking Barbie-doll model in size zeroes. Note: No fat suits were used in the making of this film.
