Will Brian De Palma ever get as sick of making his awful movies as we are of watching them? The Untouchables was over 25 years ago, and it’s been straight downhill since. Passion is the same hypersexualized and hyperstylized garbage he’s been churning out for years—no teeth, nothing original, nothing interesting. Two ad agency rivals (Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace) are climbing over one another—with men and with business. This one-dimensional film is straight out of the direct-to-Showtime craze of 1980s erotic thrillers, minus the eroticism or the thrills. That’s not wholly true. It’s tough for McAdams to avoid being sexy when acting sexy, but Passion is terribly empty even with that upshot. If, like nearly everyone else, you’ve skipped a lot of De Palma movies, there’s no reason to change course now.
