Page One: Inside The New York Times

When some newspapers perished in a media sea change about five years ago, it was predicted that big dailies were a dying breed. The New York Times—for all practical purposes, the nation’s paper of record—took a few blows across the bow, but the Grey Lady is still standing. Page One: Inside the New York Times fawns over its subject at times, but it’s a strong film that covers the changing landscape well—almost too well. There are fascinating storylines, like the paper investigating the collapse of the Tribune Company (which runs the big dailies in Chicago and Los Angeles) and the Times’ recent partnership with WikiLeaks—but there might be too many subplots when all is said and done. It loses focus by spreading itself so thin, but not so much that it’s worth skipping the film.
