New: Sahara Café and Hookah Lounge
A new Middle Eastern restaurant and hookah lounge has opened in the old Guadalajara Grill location at 1730 E. Prince Road. Sahara Café and Hookah Lounge is owned and operated by Jamal Lulu—originally from Jordan—and offers a menu of kabobs, stuffed grape leaves, shawarma, sandwiches, salads and appetizers. The hookah lounge is behind the courtyard with two gurgling waterfalls, and there are more flavors of smoke to choose from than we have room to list. Hours: 11 a.m. to midnight, Sunday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 4 a.m., Friday and Saturday; and noon to 10 p.m., Sunday; 881-5800.
The Boca Challenge
Your mission, should you choose to consume it: Go to Boca at 828 E. Speedway Blvd., and finish 17 tacos and a giant stuffed potato in 45 minutes. The victorious receive the meal for free and their name on the Wall of Fame. The unsuccessful cough up $50, which is a pretty good deal anyway. Challengers are asked to make reservations by calling 777-8134.
The former executive chef of Anthony's in the Catalinas serves some mean street food out of his food truck, The Rolling Chef. Carlos Aponte uses the finest ingredients in the tacos, cheesesteaks, roast-beef sandwiches and other items he sells for next to nothing, and new items are always in the works. You'll find the truck on the corner of Pennington Street and Stone Avenue from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., weekdays, and outside of the Music Box Lounge (6951 E. 22nd St.) on weekend nights.
We'll get back to you in a few weeks with more details on the Street Delights food truck; the owner doesn't want to go live until he works out some kinks. He did, however, verify that the truck will specialize in desserts, and that he recently took second place for his bananas foster pie at the Eat More Pie! event, which is quite an accolade.
Farmers' Market Relocates
The Santa Cruz River Farmers' Market is moving from the corner of Speedway and Riverview boulevards to the Mercado San Agustin at 100 S. Avenida del Convento. Organizers say the move—which will take place Thursday, June 16—will offer more room and shelter from the elements. Hours will stay the same: 4 to 7 p.m., every Thursday.
