Noshing Around

World Food Day

Sunday, Oct. 16, marks the 25th anniversary of World Food Day, which brings awareness to the issues of hunger and food distribution systems globally. On the local front, Pastiche hosts a brunch featuring Arizona wines for $100 per person ($65 goes to the Community Food Bank and is tax deductible), a no-host Bloody Mary and mimosa bar, and a silent auction. RSVP at 325-3333. Also, October is Philanthropy With Phlavor month at Pastiche, where 5 percent of the check goes to the charity of your choice, at 3025 N. Campbell Ave.

Velvet Elvis

As the weather turns cooler, now is the time to explore the more pastoral towns to the southeast. On a recent trip to Patagonia, we dined at the Velvet Elvis, an inventive gourmet pizza palace that we wished was in our own backyard. The crust and combination of toppings wowed our jaded palates, and the friendly service made us want to do a U-turn back to Patagonia soon. Check it out at www.velvetelvispizza.com; 292 Nagle Ave.; (520) 394-2102. Call for hours, as they vary.

In the RA

The press materials say that RA is "a destination for the young and chic." The 11 new menu items include nutty grilled chicken salad, spicy tuna lettuce wraps and crunchy calamari roll, paired with ginger martinis and sparkling wine. Life is good when you're young and restless at 2905 E. Skyline Drive; 615-3970.

Drink Arizona Week

From Oct. 17-23, a dozen of Tucson's independent restaurants will feature Arizona wines by the glass. Experience the nuances of Colibri, Kokopelli, Dos Cabezas and Callaghan (also served at the White House--but don't hold that against them). For a list of participating restaurants and other events, visit www.tucsonculinaryfestival.com.

Good to the Last Drop

Kelle inquired about the award-winning Tostinos, which had been roasting coffee locally since 1986 and could be found by the bag at Costco and the 17th Street Market, and in restaurants such as El Charro and Casino del Sol, among others. Unfortunately, Tostinos has roasted its last bean and gone out of business.
