Café JasperCafé Jasper opened within the past six weeks and is locally owned by Lisa Ferrendilla and Steve Vermand. It's a welcome addition to the high-end venues in the area. Everything on the Western-American menu is made from scratch, starting with the pancake mix and enchilada sauce. Breakfast specialties include Western eggs benedict made with cornbread, homemade chorizo and green chile. Open Tuesday through Sunday for breakfast (starting at 6:30 a.m.) and lunch only at 6370 N. Cinco de Mayo
Last week, El Charro opened its fourth location (five if you count the airport's limited-menu location) at 4699 E. Speedway Blvd., in the space formerly occupied Smokin' and before that, vacant. Although on the busy corner of Swan Road and Speedway, restaurants don't have a great track record here. In my humble opinion, the building blends into the bland landscape, but perhaps the decorative lights will give it some spice. Since El Charro is the oldest continuously family-owned Mexican restaurant in the United States (according to their Web site, www.elcharrocafe.com) and has been around since 1922, we have no doubt it will succeed. On May 5-7, all El Charro locations will celebrate with $1 drink specials, prizes and great food.
