Tapas and Tempranillos

Pastiche Modern Eatery starts 2004 with a wine dinner featuring tapas and tempranillos. What's tempranillos? It's user-friendly Spanish red wine matched with an entire menu of appetizers. The dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $75 per person, including tax and gratuity or $65 per person pre-paid at 3025 N. Campbell Ave., 325-3333.


Forced Out

Eight-year-old DiMaggio's, in the basement of Bank One at 2 E. Congress St. closed Dec. 31. Owner Joan Shepherd said her customers signed a petition to keep DiMaggio's open, but the building's new owner, Donald Semro, closed the restaurant anyway. Reached by phone, Semro said his plans for the building have not been formulated. Let's hope that revitalization doesn't send all the mom-and-pop businesses away.

Since DiMaggio's was a family-owned business, Shepherd's entire family is now unemployed, plus, she says, she still owes a friend $13,000 for the original purchase from Tommy DiMaggio more than two years ago. Shepherd is now looking for work as a restaurant manager.


Cross-Dressing Pepperoni

In a television commercial for DiGiorno frozen pizza, two men--one in drag with a raging 5 o'clock shadow--converse meaningfully about honesty. Their relationship has to start without secrets, so one confesses that the pizza is not delivery, but DiGiorno's. Clever.

Speaking of cross-dressing, Lucky Cheng's, a New York City restaurant, sued the Zagat Survey for $10 million for this bad food review: "God knows 'you don't go for the food' ... rather you go to 'gawk' at the 'hilarious,' 'cross-dressing' staff. Well-wishers suggest they 'freshen up the menu and their makeup.'"
