Noshing Around

Politics in the Kitchen

The ongoing fund-raiser series Primavera Cooks heats up on June 11 when guest chefs--state Sen. Gabrielle Giffords (a Democrat) and Mayor Bob Walkup (a Republican)--mix it up for an eclectic feast of their favorite recipes paired with wines at Café Terra Cotta. Then, on Father's Day, June 15, there is more Primavera Cooks at Bistro Zin. Treat Dad to a memorable meal for an outstanding cause. Contact Kara at 623-5111 ext. 122 for reservations.

Fat Tuesday

Get your ya-yas at the newly installed Cajun grill. Known throughout Florida, Louisiana and other parts of Arizona for their famous frozen drinks--especially the signature daiquiri--Fat Tuesday also dishes up Cajun/Creole inspirations such as catfish, etoufee, po boy sandwiches and much more. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., 800 E. University Blvd., 798-3287. Free parking with validation is available at the Tyndall Street parking facility.

Cuvee World Bistro

It opens June 6 serving lunch and dinner (formerly Presidio Grill) at 3352 E. Speedway Blvd, 881-7577.

Wine and Scholarship

The local chapter of the American Food and Wine Institute hosts its annual event where a talented student from the Pima Community College culinary arts program is awarded a scholarship. AIWF, a national organization founded by Julia Child and Robert Mondavi, enhances quality of life through food and wine education. Held on June 29 at Hacienda del Sol, a five-course dinner and matching wines will be served. Reception starts at 4:30 p.m. Cost: $75. Contact Ron Skinner at aiwf@att.net for reservations.

Bye-bye Burrito

What happened to my favorite 24-hour burrito joint, Beto's, on Broadway Boulevard near Park Place Mall? There one day--and gone the next, replaced with an ugly Diego's sign. I wonder if their string of health violations had anything to do with it?
