Note to bslap - The problem here is that Arizona is burgeoning with renewable energy, and we can't buy this outside power. It's not cheaper, better or more abundant. Building this project won't increase the use of renewable energy here or in California because our own resources are so staggering. We need to push for state policies that foster the increased use of this energy, something we are woefully inadequate at doing.
This situation has all been very difficult to understand. The Fish and Wildlife Service has held total sway in making this routing decision when all others would agree - Altar Valley landowners, Pima County and the conservation community - that the route along the road across the refuge results in the least environmental impacts by not opening a new corridor and by limiting the proliferation of routes for illegal use. The NEPA process once again no longer works, not as intended. It is hostage to particular governmental and corporate interests. Something has gone very wrong here that the process cannot overcome.
I'm very sorry to see this kind of conflict at Wingspan. Zami and Casey have been instrumental to keeping Wingspan afloat. Carol is excited about leading Wingspan and making it stronger. She brings leadership that Wingspan hasn't had for awhile. We must hope that fences can be mended and that Wingspan will go on to be stronger.
To jbuchman - you should have lived in Phoenix. Tucson is an oasis compared to that place. Tucson has been a wonderful community for LGBT people compared to the rest of the Southwest. You can't beat the West Coast, but you landed in a good place if you came this far away from the coast. Count your blessings. You had some here.
