The Cars, Heartbeat City tour, 1984, Phoenix Coliseum.
What are you listening to these days?
A better question might be: What do I not listen to these days? I have a pretty wide range of musical likings that don't fall into one specific category: Wilco, the Frames, Patty Griffin, Alabama Shakes ... did I say the Frames? Milton Mapes, the new Shins album, and don't let me forget to mention the Frames.
What was the first album you owned?
That would be the soundtrack from the movie Grease. It was a double-record. I have a feeling that's not what you were going for, though. So, when I was in fifth-grade, my older sister gave me a birthday gift consisting of three albums I had requested: Pat Benatar (Best Shots), Journey (Escape) and John Cougar (American Fool).
What artist, genre or musical trend does everyone seem to love, but you just don't get?
Trend: metal. Artist: Taylor Swift.
What musical act, current or defunct, would you most like to see perform live?
I wish I could have seen Supertramp.
Musically speaking, what is your favorite guilty pleasure?
That would be a close battle between Broadway show tunes and hip hop. I have been known under the right circumstances to break out some old-school hip-hop moves. Don't get me started. It's not pretty.
What song would you like to have played at your funeral?
"Long Ride Home," Patty Griffin.
What band or artist changed your life, and how?
Greyhound Soul. He had "bruises on his bruises." I wanted to write songs like that. Who knew I would share a stage with them many years later?
Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?
That is like asking me to pick one flavor of ice cream for the rest of my life. What if I haven't heard it yet?
