Rachel Wilson, 40, is an attorney specializing in immigration law and workers' rights. She has a master's degree in Russian linguistics and a doctorate in cognitive psychology. Among her proudest achievements is baking the winning pie in the 2011 Eat More Pie contest.
What was the first concert you ever saw?
It was the Captain and Tennille at the Minnesota State Fair, in St. Paul, in 1977. I couldn't remember the year, so I googled it, and the first link that came up was someone else's Nine Questions, and it was the same concert!
What are you listening to these days?
I can't get enough of The Black Keys, Brothers and El Camino. I've also been listening to a lot of Arcade Fire, and the new albums by Seashell Radio and Silver Thread Trio.
What was the first album you owned?
It was a Sesame Street album. It had "Rubber Duckie" and "The People in Your Neighborhood" on it.
What artist, genre or musical trend does everyone seem to love, but you just don't get?
This is where I commit heresy and admit I don't get Radiohead.
What musical act, current or defunct, would you most like to see perform live?
I want to see Seashell Radio back together again. My second choice would be U2, circa 1984.
Musically speaking, what is your favorite guilty pleasure?
Russian pop music: I love this pop-rock band called Splean; and, for pure pop, I like Ruki Vverh. Also, that Foster the People song "Pumped Up Kicks."
What song would you like to have played at your funeral?
One would be "True" by Spandau Ballet. But the song I really think expresses my feelings about death would have to be "Instant Karma" (by John Lennon).
What band or artist changed your life, and how?
Helen Reddy made me a feminist. When I was 4, I was addicted to the song "I Am Woman," despite the fact that my mother would giggle when I sang it.
Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?
Right now, it's El Camino by The Black Keys.
