Nine Questions

Serge

One of the founders of Bloat Records, Serge has had a hand in many of that label's projects as a band member (Bebe and Serge, Sonic Titan) and a producer (Bob Log III, Winelord, Monster Pussy). He's also been an announcer for Tucson Roller Derby for eight years. His current band, The Pork Torta, will perform at the Red Room at Grill on Friday, June 17, as part of the Bloat Records Record Party.

What was the first concert you ever saw?

The Captain and Tennille on ice, with the Sesame Street Ice Capades, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum (in Phoenix). This clearly puts Bebe and Serge in perspective.

What are you listening to these days?

Blue Cheer, The Monks, the new God of the Sea, commercial jingles, Thin Lizzy, Monster Pussy, Tina Yothers, Swell Maps, cat snores ...

What was the first album you owned?

I think it was Abba, Arrival. I loved staring at that helicopter!

What artist, genre or musical trend does everyone seem to love, but you just don't get?

Everything. More specific? Everything from jam bands to juggalos. And all that's in between. Most music sucks just from the sheer bulk of it.

What musical act, current or defunct, would you most like to see perform live?

Screamin' Jay Hawkins. I had my chance and missed it—then he died. I'm taking that regret to my grave.

Musically speaking, what is your favorite guilty pleasure?

Selena. Although, technically, I don't feel guilty about it at all, or, really, anything else!

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

I want Steph Dickson to sing the Apollo College theme song. Steph, consider this my will, so you're legally bound now!

What band or artist changed your life, and how?

The Butthole Surfers, the early years. ... Quite an amazing time for music. People like Diamanda Galás, Swans and Einstürzende Neubauten strode the Earth like giants.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?

"Kicker Conspiracy"/"Wings" by the Fall. It's my favorite period of the Fall: two drummers, one guitar.
