An avid music collector, Larry Mac is one of the hardest-working men in radio. Known for his work at Phoenix's KUPD and Las Vegas' KVGS, Mac has found a new home at Tucson's KLPX FM 96.1.
What was the first concert you ever saw?
The Police with XTC at the Arizona State Fair in 1979 at the Coliseum. I think the tickets were $5 for admission to the fair, and the show was free. Hard to believe ticket prices have been raised so drastically.
What CDs are in your changer right now?
I have a computer MP3 player, so everything I have is ripped off my CD collection. I have about 24,000 songs on my hard drive ... everything from Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, the Cure and the Ramones; and new stuff like Red Vein, Ludo, Dr. Manhattan, the Gutter Twins and the Airborne Toxic Event. I am a music fiend.
How many total albums do you own (CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks)?
My vinyl collection is not as huge as it used to be, so I am left with about 300 vinyl LPs and a couple hundred 45s. I own about 20,000 CDs.
Do you download music, and if so, legally or illegally?
Legally, of course! I pay for everything.
What was the first album you owned?
The first album I ever owned was a gift from my aunt. It was the Rolling Stones, Let It Bleed, on vinyl. The first albums I ever bought were Kiss, Alive!, and Elvis Presley's Moody Blue ... the day after he died!
What song would you like to have played at your funeral?
Without a doubt, "Comfortably Numb" (by Pink Floyd)!
Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?
I absolutely love chill music, kinda electronic stuff. It's smooth jazz without the pretension!
What band or artist changed your life, and how?
Pink Floyd. When I first heard Dark Side of the Moon, and then The Wall, I found a band that I connected to lyrically and musically. Someone else out there had similar feelings on stuff, and it hit me.
Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all-time?
It's tattooed on my right arm: Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.
