Dubbed "the 'Iron Chef' of the torchworking world," the Flame Off has become a highly anticipated staple of the Gem & Mineral Show. Over a dozen glass artists will compete in one of two sessions, each a 90-minute interval, on Friday, Feb. 6 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Sonoran Glass School, 633 W. 18th St. The time constraint adds heated pressure as the artists race against the clock to finish making their object. This year's theme is myths, and the artists are given the freedom to decide what they want to create within that category. Audience members get an up-close look at the fiery action as the competitors torch, blow, and weld solid glass into delicate, malleable forms. Food trucks will provide grub to any hungry spectators. Tickets are $15, with proceeds benefitting the Sonoran Glass School and its award-winning youth development program. For more info, check out the event Facebook page.
