Although there have been three sequels in the Pixar universe, Monsters University is the first prequel. That’s about where the originality ends, though. That’s not a bad thing, really, because audiences still like Mike and Sulley (the returning Billy Crystal and John Goodman), and Monsters University provides enough laughs and fun to make up for the fact that this otherwise is some pretty stale bread. The story is as you might expect: Here’s a look at these two great characters when they first met as undergraduates. There’s some tension because Mike has to work so much harder to be scary than the big, loud Sulley, but eventually their friendship takes hold. Even if Pixar is kind of phoning it in right now, at least it’s not Cars 2, so you’re happy to get the call.
