Monsoon Wedding

Rated NR

Talented Indian director Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay, Mississippi Masala smoothly handles this magnificent film about an upper-middle-class Delhi family playing host to the anything-but-smooth arranged marriage of its daughter Aditi (Vasundhara Das) to computer programmer Hemant (Parvin Dabas), a relatively progressive (read: Americanized) Indian living in Texas. While the bride and groom try to learn if they even like each other, the family members of each exhibit the joyous convulsions of humanity that make Robert Altman’s best ensemble films sing. Dialogue is spoken in an amalgam of English, Hindi and Punjabi; the result is deliciously musical. Cinematographer Declan Quinn, after solid but unremarkable work in American films (28 Days, Leaving Las Vegas), discovers his own style in a palette of bold colors and darting, intimate camera movements.
