Re: “Assistance League's Volunteers are looking out for the Tucson Community

I have nothing but respect for the Assistance League of Tucson, but the grammatically incorrect quote from Helen Van Auken (a retired principal and teacher) is probably an example of why Tucsonans have so little respect for TUSD.

Re: “Hey! What Happened To the Arizona Monitor Website?

Sounds like typical Wardist shenanigans. The rest of us would never have known about the life & death of the Monitor without reading it here. There are still some well-known "conservative political-messaging sites" that can be trusted. I'd expect sensible endorsements of Martha McSally.

Re: “Unpacking a Great Hearts Charter School's Hair Braiding Story

I do think reversing the decision was right, but hair braids as "part of an African American cultural tradition" is true for women, but only a recent fashion statement for men. They're every bit as much of a trend as shaved heads, Mohawks, rats tails, pony tails, or unnatural hair dyes. The school has a right to a dress or hair code, but it should be based on cleanliness or distraction. Students should be allowed a right to argue against any dress code.

I wish the idea of "girls were expected to wear dresses or skirts" - not even culottes - in Tucson Public Schools before the 1970s had some justification when I was a kid. The expense & discomfort of special school clothes for girls was the worst sexism I remember in my entire life (67 years).

Re: “Facebook-Free Friday

I waste too much time too, even without a computer at home. The one enjoyable thing about facebook is contact with decades old friends from my childhood, & posts from cousins I rarely see.

Re: “Local Danish Bakery Serves Up Savory Desserts

It sure sounds as if they make it the right way. My mother (if she was still alive) might have given them a lot of business. She never passed up a Wienerbrd when we lived in Sweden 1962/1963. I doubt if she ever bought a so-called "Danish" from any American bakery.
(I keep trying to edit & this comment refuses to take my Swedish o with two dots over it between the r & d in Wienerbrod).

Re: “Welcome to Summer

No article on keeping cool in Tucson should skip a mention of Tucson Parks and Recreation pools. A summer pass good for all pools is only $75 for adults & $30 for kids under 17. Better deals are available for families or year-round swimmers:…

Re: “Mailbag

I didn't see the story calling Dave Ewoldt's platform "Neo-Hippie" - but the description amused me. I went to the LD-28 debates in September with an open mind. Ewoldt reminded me of George Carlin.
