Mister Lonely

Rated NR

A beautifully photographed film, Mister Lonely is the latest from Harmony Korine, the writer of Kids, Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy. There are two stories; one concerns a Michael Jackson impersonator who joins a commune of celebrity impersonators, and the other follows a group of nuns who learn they can sort of fly. The latter story, though occupying maybe 20 percent of the film, is better realized, with the exception of a creaky performance by Werner Herzog, who seems to be struggling to remember his lines, as a priest. The main plot, about the impersonators, suffers from excessive cleverness and some stilted dialogue, but it still has lots of charm. It’s helped tremendously by the performance of Diego Luna (Y Tu Mamá También), who manages to make Korine’s occasionally unfortunate script sound natural. Also starring Samantha Morton, Anita Pallenberg, James Fox and some feelings.
