KXCI DELAYS GM SELECTIONTucson's community radio station, KXCI FM 91.3, has decided to return to the drawing board in its search for a new general manager.
The goal was to announce a replacement for Larry Bruce, who departed abruptly in April, by the first of August. But instead of picking between the two finalists, Laura Smith and long-time KXCI stalwart Randy Peterson, the process has been reopened. Peterson has acted as interim GM since Bruce's departure. It's one of three hats he has worn at the station during this transition period. Peterson's main duties hinge around membership and community outreach.
"The board feels that, although the two candidates were qualified, they did not entirely satisfy the board's expectations and requirements to fill the position at this time," said search committee chairman David Olsen in a statement.
The decision to delay the selection occurred at the Aug. 3 board meeting, one day after the KXCI Community Advisory Board voted unanimously (with one abstention) in favor of reopening the procedures.
OVERALL NEW WEEKEND ANCHOR AT KVOATucson's NBC affiliate, KVOA Channel 4, greatly enhanced its on-air presence with the addition of John Overall, a newscaster with experience in Phoenix and Los Angeles. Generally, reporters make the move from Tucson to Phoenix to improve their stock, but Overall accepted the weekend anchor/general assignment reporter spot following a stint as morning and noon anchor at KPHO in the Valley.
"I am very excited to join a highly respected, outstanding news operation like News 4," Overall said. "My wife and I love Arizona and are delighted to be in Tucson."
Overall has plenty of experience behind the desk. Prior to his run in Phoenix, he served as prime-time anchor for KVVU in Las Vegas. Overall also locked down morning and noon anchor responsibilities for KCBS in Los Angeles.
"I am very pleased to welcome John to Tucson," said KVOA news director Kathleen Choal. "He is a major-market talent with impressive news credentials, and I know he will be a dynamic addition to our news team."
