Re: “In Which I Get FOXed, But Not OutFOXed, On the John C. Scott Show

Good job debunking more right-wing myth, David.

Re: “Rep. Martha McSally, Former Rep. Ron Barber, and Courage

BTW, Tucson Weekly should really require commenters identify themselves. Would make for a much more polite environment. Those who comment anonymously are cowards who lack conviction.

Re: “Rep. Martha McSally, Former Rep. Ron Barber, and Courage

McSally is a coward if she won't face criticism. Giving the excuse that those who don't support her might show up and make themselves heard is a lame excuse for a representative to refuse to engage their constituents except in the most controlled of circumstances (tele-halls are completely controlled and pre-screened). More importantly, it shows her basic contempt for viewpoints other than her own or those who support her. She should listen to those who oppose her, they might just have something valid to say that will change her mind. Sad.

Re: “A Dollar a Day, and Other Observations About Ducey's Education Funding Proposal

Given that total funding of Arizona's schools amounts to over $18 billion, $100 million in new funding is a grand 0.5% increase: that's pretty close to nothing -- a rounding error away from nothing, actually.

The point is that Douchey will get a lot more rhetorical mileage from that money than Arizona's schools will get in teacher pay, new programs and materials, or any significant bump in per pupil spending. Douchey is basically giving homeopathic levels of new funding to a school system that is starving to death and talking like he's making a heroic effort to save the patient.

Re: “David Gowan Bows To Reality, Quits Congressional Race

Go Babeu! I just can't wait for the GOPs to shoot themselves in the foot by nominating him. Is there anything that a good dose of immigrant bashing won't convince the GOP voters to do? Nominate a guy who abused, threatened, and exploited an illegal immigrant for sex? Sure, as long as he foams at the mouth sufficiently during the day when talking about all the young, fine, gay Mexican men he's hooking up with at night... why not!?

Re: “"Have You No Sense of Decency?"

Trump is now defending himself by claiming, ad nauseum, that he was "viciously attacked" by Khan and was only defending himself... by saying that Khan had "no right" to speak about him. That's so un-American I can't believe Trump is even an American. I want to see his birth certificate. Maybe he was born in a Willy Wonka factory overseas somewhere? I don't know, I'm only asking the question...

Re: “When Drinking Liberally Goes Wrong: Tucson Group 86'd by The Shanty

I debated whether to comment on this matter, since I was not present, but as I was mentioned in the article, I think my perspective might be of interest to some. Though I have not hosted DL, nor in fact attended but rarely, for some time now, I'm saddened and disappointed that DL's long and fruitful relationship with a wonderful and storied local business has ended in acrimony. It is especially sad that it has become so public.

During my years hosting DL, I always found Bill Nugent to be helpful, accommodating, and kind. I love The Shanty and have the greatest respect for Bill. He has a business to run, and if DL was not enhancing his business, it is right that he should end the association. Keep a Grimbergen cold for me, Bill. I'll always come back to The Shanty. As one commenter astutely pointed out, Bill's bar is the place where the heartbeat of Tucson is heard most clearly.

That said, I think Drinking Liberally serves an important need in our community and am hopeful that it will become established in a new location. It is a tremendous comfort to know that there is a community of liberal, open-minded folks who want to discuss the issues of the day in a thoughtful, substantive and civil manner. I fondly recall the many evenings spent debating and discussing, celebrating and commiserating, and generally enjoying the society and good will of my fellow citizens.

I hope that this unfortunate misunderstanding does not discourage folks from enjoying the pleasures of Drinking Liberally with your fellow citizens.
