Documentary filmmaker Dheeraj Akolkar takes a look at one of the more enigmatic power-couples of the last century — actress Lil Ullman and legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. The film is basically a sit-down interview with Ullman, and Akolkar masterfully uses clips from Bergman’s films to draw comparisons between their tumultuous relationship and the art they created together. Ullman doesn’t hold back on the often hellish situations Bergman put her through; he was emotionally insecure as he was talented, and his jealousy often got the better of him. When he wasn’t pushing her past her physical limits on set, he was basically keeping her prisoner on their own isolated stretch of Sweden. It’s a relationship that had severe ups and downs, but one look at Ullman’s deep blue eyes as she’s talking about the storm they weathered through is enough to make me a believer in true love.
