Stars Pick Their Top Five! THIS WEEK: Blank Range

by

comment

Hailing from Nashville, Blank Range plays a unique style of passionate, electrified Americana. Sure, there's crooning country vocals and gospel-esque organ, but there's also distorted guitars and some serious jams. It may be easy to dismiss Blank Range's music as the domain reserved only for whiskey drinkers and barefoot stompers (not that that's even a bad thing, really) but once you listen to their lyrics and examine their songwriting, you'll see there's a lot more to them. A look at guitarist and vocalist Grant Gustafson's favorite albums show just how wide-ranging the band's tastes and styles truly are.

With the Donkey Tonk Band and Lana Rebel Band on Saturday, March 10 at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Free. 21+.

Kendrick Lamar
To Pimp A Butterfly

I can appreciate a concept album no matter the quality because I have respect for the attempt, but this plays out so perfectly. The music is grandiose and engaging and Kendrick's cast of characters has me hanging on all the way through.

Leonard Cohen Songs From A Room

I've spent so much time with this album and every listen there is a new line that gets to me. He's such a unique storyteller and this collection is one of my favorites.

Buffy Sainte-Marie Illuminations

I got really enthralled with Buffy's voice and really found her to have realized her vision with this record. It runs the gamut of human beauty from light and introspective to visceral, aggressive, and dissonant. It feels very honest and there is some wild psychedelic production.

Ornette Coleman The Shape of Jazz to Come

There is something so inherently true about catharsis. To hear Ornette on the first track, "Lonely Woman" wasn't my first witnessing but it made a serious and permanent impact. A very special moment.

Bob Dylan Highway 61 Revisited

I could listen to this album over and over again forever. It really feels like a captured moment, an iconic moment in human history in a snapshot. The performances are perfectly human.
