Kinky Boots

Rated NR

I wonder who cracked the formula for the feel-good movie and invented the program that churns out boilerplate material like Kinky Boots. I’m thinking it was probably Ted Bundy or Ed Meese or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or a cartoon dog. After watching Kinky Boots, I left the theater feeling so good I nearly puked. It’s the Story of a Man … Who Must Return to His Roots … and Discover Something About Prejudice … and Something About Friendship. Which is to say he goes home to the shoe factory his father owned and has to save it from bankruptcy in order to win the love of the small-town people who always found him a bit fey. Oh, plus, he meets a transvestite, who he just randomly makes the head designer for the factory. Which is full of hicks who think transvestitism is kind of gay. People learn and laugh and live and love and do everything by a formula that’s so standardized that the whole movie is like having a two-hour déjà vu. I really wonder what writers are thinking when they pen this kind of crap; I’m almost certain that they not only know it’s been done 100 times before, but they think that this is the Right and True and Proper way to do it, and that they pat themselves on the back every time they insert the next formulaic scene or clichéd moment. And people say there is no evil in the world.
